Eurasian Leaders Line Up to Congratulate Armenian PM on Election Win

(MENAFN) Leaders across Eurasia extended congratulations Monday to Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan following his party's commanding performance in the country's weekend parliamentary elections.

Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze was among the first to respond, posting on X — the US social media platform — late Sunday to offer "heartfelt congratulations" to his Armenian counterpart.

"Looking forward to continuing our close cooperation to strengthen the strategic partnership and friendly relations between Georgia and Armenia for the prosperity of our nations," Kobakhidze said.

Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev followed suit, congratulating Pashinyan on his victory and wishing him "further successful work in the long-term national interests of Armenia." Tokayev praised the conduct of the vote, noting it was held in accordance with national legislation under open and proper conditions, and signaled that Astana stood ready to deepen cooperation with Yerevan across all sectors, according to a statement from Kazakhstan's presidential press service Akorda.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy also offered his congratulations, framing Pashinyan's win as a victory for Armenia's "sovereignty, your independence, and your right to live the way you choose."

Zelenskyy used the moment to press for stronger European engagement with Yerevan: "Ukraine is ready to expand our cooperation, and now is precisely the time for the European Union to provide real support to Armenia and do everything necessary to ensure that people feel their lives are better thanks to their relationship with Europe. This is a test for the European Union. It is important not to lose time or miss opportunities," he wrote on X.

Moldovan President Maia Sandu also voiced her congratulations on X, asserting that Pashinyan's victory had been secured "despite massive foreign interference."

"Moldova and Armenia share a commitment to peace and stability in Europe, and I look forward to deepening our dialogue and working closely together in the years ahead," Sandu added.

The election drew significant participation, with approximately 1.47 million of Armenia's roughly 2.5 million registered voters casting ballots at 2,005 polling stations nationwide — a turnout of nearly 59%.

Preliminary results released by Armenia's Central Election Commission showed Pashinyan's Civil Contract party capturing 49.82% of the vote. Its closest rival, the Strong Armenia party led by billionaire Samvel Karapetyan, trailed with 23.28%.
